If President Barack Obama’s line about spilled milk sounded a little familiar, it’s because he’s hardly the first one cite a rule that said milk was a type of oil in a complaint about EPA overregulation. It’s been a frequent claim by Republicans, including one-time presidential candiate Duncan Hunter, who said last November that “people were fined, hundreds of companies — $5,000 a day for spilled milk.” Representative Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) also took up the cause, wondering if sippy-cup regulations were next.
The EPA denied such fines were ever issued.
